new tournament system etc.
Hello!
Sorry I haven't been around much lately (not that anyone cares!).
Anyway, I am planning to develop a new tournament system. It would be developed using a phased approach where a new piece of functionality which tested and released then the next bit of functionality will be added etc.
A new server will be required which needs ASP.NET 2 and SQL Server 2005 (see related links at the bottom of this message for more info). I've had a brief look at hosting companies that support this and it's going to cost around $35 / £20 a month. So I was hoping if a few of us could club together, we could pay for the hosting between us. So if for example, 5 people contributed, then this could cost about $8 / £5 per month, etc.
To start with I'd have a very basic round robin tournament page on there whilst the main site is being developed. Of course the existing tournament system can still be used (as long as the server is alive).
If you're interested in contributing towards the new server costs, please send me an email at whirlwind666@hotmail.com or send me a private msg via this forum.
Thanks!
Simon

Update:
I've had a donation from 9balldotcom of £50 for the hosting. Thank you very much for that. If anybody else would like to donate, there is a "Make a Donation" button on the http://www.vphqtournaments.com website. It is located on the left of the page below the main navigation menu. Obviously it doesn't have to be £50 - any amount will do, it all helps :)
So that there is something on the server to start with, I have almost finished writing a very basic round robin tournament webpage into which TDs can input player names, match scores and the current standings grid is automatically updated. I'm only working on it in bits and pieces because of time constraints, but it should be ready for deployment within the next couple of days.
My plan for the new tournament system is initially to write a proposal document which will outline my plans for the system. Once that is written, I shall publish it and accept feedback on it and revise it etc.
That's the update, thanks for reading.

I think that those people who enjoy playing in VPHQ tournaments should consider any small dontaion that they can in order to support the system.
A few pounds or a few dollars is not a lot to ask.
If youve been playing tourneys for a number of years youll realise that these things dont happen without the voluntary services provided by Tournament Directors and By Simon for spending valuable time in creating a tournament system for us to use.
In order to have a reliable system we need to pay for that and with no support, then we dont have tourneys.
Paypal is the easiest option and is quick and simple.
Ive enjoyed Virtual Pool and im more than happy to support in any way I can...I look at as an investment....the return is we all get to play in tourneys and play our game among buddies weve met online over the time weve all been here.
So do what you can please,no matter how much its all appreciated.

Il be matching Hughs offer next month budget is abit tight this month with crimbo and all.
people need to learn "its a game , and a game by definition can be either won or lost .
If you take away the ability to win or lose you are no longer playing a game and your time is not spent challenging your skill over another's instead your time is now worthless and wasted.

Hugh is the only person who has contributed anything.
I'm in the process of writing out a document describing the problems that need solving and then describing my suggested solutions to give a good tournament system.
I haven't got a great deal of free time, but I'm working on it in the evening when I can.

Thanks pk. It won't be ready for the coding yet because it's still in the design stage. But when the time comes for coding, I might just take you up on that offer.

Sorry, due my career I don't have enough time to offer help.
.. and it's against my principles to donate any more money to the tourney system, before others kick in.

Simon, would it be possible to update these please?
http://www.vphqtournaments.com/stats1.txt
http://www.vphqtournaments.com/stats2.txt
http://www.vphqtournaments.com/stats3.txt
etc etc
I thought they where a nice touch and would be even better if they where included in the system so they updated automatically.

I know you use AOL but open your Internet Explorer. Look for the Tools tab up top and click it. Select Internet Options and then click the Programs tab. Change your e-mail in the drop-down menu to America Online and you should be good to go.snope wrote:I will contribute...if I can find a way to do that ....I tried to send nugget an email ...but I don't know how to set up that pop3 crap for outlook is there a way to change my email setting to aol ...i think i did that on my old pc but forgot how ....thx snope

I have an additional suggestion for this one:
Instead of a simple text file it would be nice to have something where you can sort by the different columns.
I.e. sort by number of tourneys played or by percentage won, in the same statistic.
I offer 20$ if that gets in.. (j/k)

Hi, if you mean updating the existing tournament system with that infromation, "no", if you mean including it in the new tournament system "yes".
Sorry about the delayed response.
Now GET OUT OF MY FACE!! (j/k)
