FAQs

My system is crashing. What should I do?

Install the latest drivers for your video card. You can usually get these from the card manufacturers web site or from the video chip manufacturers web site. It is usually best to use the version from the card manufacturer. Some older cards may not run VP2/Hall correctly because the video drivers were never fully DirectX 7 compatible.

Can I run Virtual Pool 2 on XP?

You can run VP2 on XP in Windows 98 compatibility mode.Go here to see how to setup compatibility mode: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/gethelp/appcompat.asp

What version of DirectX do I need to run Virtual Pool 2?

You should have DirectX 7 or later. You can get DirectX here.

How can I run Virtual Pool 2 on Windows XP?

Use Windows 98 Compatibility mode.

I get a can't load background file error when I try to start Virtual Pool 2?

You need this patch: Windows 98 Patch

3D Hardware Accelerators

Virtual Pool 2/Hall supports hardware accelerators using the Direct3Dinterface. There are two cases where Virtual Pool 2/Hall does not work with 3D accelerators:

  • There is no Direct3D driver. You must install a Direct3D driver. Check with your card manufacturer if you don't have one.
  • Hardware that does not allow direct access to the video frame buffer. Virtual Pool 2/Hall requires direct access to the frame buffer. The PowerVR chip technology does not work with Virtual Pool 2/Hall.

The Video Statistics dialog shows the status of any 3D hardware detected by Virtual Pool 2/Hall. To enable/disable 3D hardware use the check box in the Game Preferences dialog. If the check box is grayed out, Virtual Pool 2/Hall does not recognize your hardware or the Direct3D driver is missing.

Try running Virtual Pool 2/Hall with the 3D hardware enabled and disabled. Use the Video Statistics dialog to measure performance. Virtual Pool 2/Hall software rendering may run faster than some 3D hardware.

If you get a "out of texture memory" error, try using hawg_pen_d3d.scn. It has the least amount of textures.

The Voodoo I and II cards will show screen artifacts when changing into menu mode. Because the Voodoo does not support GDI, the driver changes back to the desktop. The menu interface still works but the artifacts left behind are unsightly and confusing.
