The Championshiops is a great idea Hugh, and I hope this takes off.
I'm going to be anoying though and not suggest any of the 3 options above. The reason? I think the offical format for the Straight Pool Championship is excellent anyway. A bit complicated and tough to set up with the current tourney system I know. But that could be done with the last 16 at least, and the group and last 32 stages be done on a dedicated table on your own website.
Heres the Format for the Offical World Championships:
based on 64 sign ups max.
Group stages
All 64 players are divided into 8 groups where they play in round-robin format. Each match in this round is a race to 100 points. The leading 4 players in each group proceed to the next round.
Last 32
The games are played in double-elimination format until 16 players remain. Matches are extended to races to 150.
Last 16
The games are played in single-elimination format, and matches are further extended, to races to 200.

I would love to see the offical format used to keep the authenticity of the event in the same way you have done wioth snooker and 9 ball.
It isn't quite as long as the formats you sugest , and If it is about "playing till you drop" and had to go with one of the proposals above then I vote for the 2nd option.

Your proposal Andy is as the real world 9ball championships are set with an initial groups stage with the top players etc going through to the last 32.
I see your idea as the way Ive always wanted the 9ball tourney to be,but its then making it more difficult to manage for me.
Unless someone wants to set up a groups stage...however theres no way thered be 64 players in this.
Everything though is still up for suggestion and we need more input from the players.
