Video card .....

Post by Londonchris »

Hi all,
I really need a new videocard since i`m trying to cope with onboard type at the mo and it`s quite poor!
I need an AGP type card though my power supply is only 300w.
Any idea what i could get that would run without any problema AND be good enough for the new gold version? (even if a while away yet)
Still saving up for a new machine in a couple of years or so anyway, just need an improvement!
12v rail details are +12v-13,0A -12V-0,8A
fuse:6,3A,250V~(+3,3VP+5V=180W MAX)

Any ideas? way to complicated for me to figure out!
Cheers.

Any used ATI Radeon 9600-9800 will do. Want some more, go for a X800, any flavour.

If you want Nvidia, any Geforce 4 (NOT MX) and up will do. Nvidias can be extremely noisy though.

What CPU are you running? If its one of those inefficient Intel P4 radiators, power could be an issue. Some of them can burn over 100W.

X800 XT Platinum: 64W maximum / full load
X800 Pro: 48W max
9800 XT: 60W max
9800 Pro: 47W max
9600 XT: 23W max
9600 Pro: 18W max

GF 6800 Ultra: 72W max
GF 6800 GT: 55W max
GF 6800: 39W max
FX 5950 Ultra: 74W max
FX 5900 Ultra: 59W max
FX 5700 Ultra: 46W max
FX 5700: 25W max

so my recommendation is the ATI X800 Pro. Cheap, very fast, silent and low power. Idle power consumption is at around 15W whereas Geforce cards suck in around 25W. Another problem with graphics cards on Nvidia GPUs is their high load on the +12v power rail, which may be too much for your PSU.

Hope that helps
