I found the issue. When I play using my iphone in the garage, the wifi signal must not be strong enough to play. If I play from inside my house, it works fine.

I'm new to VP, but love it. When I play online via IPhone, 1/2 my games end in me sitting and waiting on the other player. I bailed fairly quick the first time.
